Purpose Of Job

The Paramedic serves as the lead-worker of a two-person emergency medical service team. The position is responsible for responding to dispatched emergencies and transport requests and ensures that proper BLS and ALS pre-hospital care is provided. Manages the operation of an emergency vehicle and safeguards equipment and supplies. Maintains the security of drugs and narcotics. Prepares various written reports on actions taken.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

Receives dispatch instructions by radio, telephone or other means. Communicates over radio and telephone with dispatch operators, hospital staff, supervisors, and representatives of other public safety organizations. Responds to calls for injured or ill patients and for patient transport. Operates an emergency vehicle in a safe manner in a variety of weather and lighting conditions. Safely and efficiently navigates the vehicle to major roads, businesses, and other facilities in the vicinity of the assigned station without assistance; locates other addresses by reading maps and consulting with dispatchers, and by identifying streets and landmarks. Communicates effectively with patients, family members, bystanders, team members, other first responding agencies, medical control and staff, dispatchers and radio operators. Whenever possible, obtains complete drug, medical history, and details on incidents or accidents from patients or others. In accordance with protocols, assesses patient status by visual observation, physical examination and the taking of vital signs. Determines necessary care, materials, equipment, medication and fluids necessary to stabilize patient, and to administer determined care. Correctly follows required steps of the selected course of treatment. Performs basic life support skills such as hemorrhage control, CPR, immobilization of suspected fractures, vital signs and oxygen administration. Performs advanced life support skills such as IV cannulation, cardiac rhythm interpretation, taking blood samples; administers medication intravenously, intramuscularly or subcutaneously; administers oral, updraft and rectal medications; complies with universal pre-cautions and body substance isolation and disposes of contaminated items and equipment. Properly administers electrotherapy; performs endotracheal intubations, airway management and relief of pneumothorax, etc. Move all patients of various sizes and weight from point of contact to their final destination in a consistent and safe manner. Communicates information on patient condition, treatment given, circumstances behind accident or illness, and other relevant information to hospital staff. Documents patient condition and care given and other related reports in a clear and precise manner using proper spelling and grammar. Documents the use of supplies and medications, particularly the use of controlled substances. Participates in formal classroom and informal field training sessions, workshops, drills and exercises to learn and practice new extrication, rescue, resuscitation and patient stabilization techniques. Assists in conducting training and orientation of new employees. Serves as a lead-worker over an EMT position. Issues instructions and counseling to EMT and reports significant discrepancies in performance or behavior to Field Supervisor. Practices using and instructs others in using all EMS equipment, supplies and materials. Responds to work during a declared state of disaster.

Minimum Qualifications:

Certification as a Paramedic in the State of Florida. CPR for Healthcare Providers. 16 Hour EVOC certificate or equivalent. Florida Class “E” Driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Satisfactory criminal background and employer reference checks.

Hours of Work:

24 hours on, 48 hours off schedule, Sunday through Saturday including holidays. Additional overtime is available.

Anticipated Starting Pay

Minimum $18.52/hour (61,627.42 annually) not including educational incentives and holidays. This is a full-time hourly position that includes County medical benefits and Special Risk State Retirement.
