About the role

Strategic is one of British Columbia’s largest natural resource consultants. We are a First Nations majority-owned company through the Ehattesaht First Nation. Strategic offers a comprehensive benefits package, mentorship & professional development, coverage of annual professional dues, and a RSP matching program. What started as a small team of Timber Development Engineers has grown over the last 20 years into an industry-renowned west coast consultancy employing 150+ people in multiple communities. Our mission is to deliver technical expertise to our valued clients, to provide a safe and positive work environment, and to lead by fostering prosperity in our communities.

Responsibilities:

As a Senior Planning Forester, you will work within a team of forest analysts, planners, and forest operations specialists to support the forest land management needs of our Indigenous, government, and industry clients.  This role will support and lead signature projects, such as the new Forest Landscape Planning Pilots, that target ecosystem restoration and encompass Indigenous ways of knowing and old-growth/watershed-level biodiversity. You will also be involved in a range of other forest management planning opportunities, including species at risk, Indigenous knowledge, timber availability and economics, recreation and non-timber values, access management, wildfire risk/mitigation, carbon sequestration, and climate change vulnerability.

We are looking for someone enthusiastic, passionate about forestry, and keenly interested in Indigenous relations, with an understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and the practice of forestry. You must be a strong communicator while working closely with internal staff, clients, agencies, and other resource professionals.  The ability to work both individually and in a team environment is essential while learning and leading the shifting forest policy framework.

Qualifications:

  • A positive team player with strong communication skills, leadership qualities, and a safety-conscious attitude.
  • An extensive knowledge of the BC provincial forestry regulations, experience in forest development and operations, forest tenure management, and landscape-level forest management concepts.
  • Post-secondary education with a natural resource management focus.
  • Registered Professional with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC).
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in forest planning.
  • Experience leading and facilitating diverse groups.
  • Strong technical writing skills with attention to detail, work accuracy, and quality.
  • An understanding of advanced forestry geomatics datasets and forest landscape analysis processes.
  • Background and/or experience in silvicultural systems, reforestation, wildfire/fuels management, and ecosystem restoration would be distinct assets.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and safe driving record.

Salary range: $88,000 to $105,000, based on experience.
