Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, you will be part of the Health, Safety and Environment team. The role of Safety Consultant encompasses a broad range of activities that include supporting NAIT in the continued growth of our Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) and collaborating with stakeholders at NAIT to support continual improvement and advancement of a culture that embraces health, safety and well-being. It is an exciting role that will allow you to apply innovation, communication and technical expertise in a variety of applications.

Excellent technical safety skills combined with your interpersonal relationship skills in client relations, teamwork and communication are required to effectively deal with staff and students while applying the values of respect, collaboration, celebration, support and accountability in your work.

Key Responsibilities

Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS). Lead inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and risk evaluations to ensure compliance and reduce risk. Provide expert health, safety, and environmental guidance and consultation to leaders, employees, project teams, and contractors. Partner with stakeholders to integrate health and safety requirements into operations, projects, and workplace activities. Conduct, support, and facilitate incident investigations, determine root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions. Support maintenance, operations and capital projects through safety planning, risk assessments, and field consultation. Review equipment, materials, processes, and workplace changes to identify hazards and recommend effective controls. Support contractor safety management, including the review of safety plans and performance. Monitor compliance, analyze performance data and trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Develop reports, procedures, training materials, and technical documentation. Collaborate with committees and multidisciplinary teams to advance health, safety, and environmental programs. Stay current on legislation, industry trends, and best practices to ensure compliance and program effectiveness. Promote a strong safety culture through leadership, engagement, and education. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities

Collaborative, customer-focused professional who works effectively across multidisciplinary teams. Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, standards, occupational hygiene, and contractor safety. Skilled in hazard identification, risk assessment, exposure evaluation, and control implementation. Proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities with a focus on practical, risk-based solutions. Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building skills. Demonstrated project management, facilitation, investigation, and root cause analysis expertise. Proficient in health and safety management systems and software, occupational hygiene instrumentation and exposure monitoring equipment, technical writing, and Microsoft Office. Adaptable and resilient, with the ability to manage competing priorities in dynamic environments.

Qualifications

Minimum 3 – 5 years of progressively responsible experience in health and safety roles. Related experience working in a large diverse organization. Preference to candidates who have successfully completed a Certificate, Diploma or Degree in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Preference to candidates who possess the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation. Hygiene experience is considered an asset. Preference to candidates with a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT) designation. Valid Class 5 driver's license and the ability to travel between NAIT locations as required.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS), or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

Remuneration: Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

The compensation range for this job posting is : $77,036.96 - $102,057.54
