Position: Vice President, Business Architecture & Strategy


Purpose

The CID&A (Customer Insights, Data & Analytics) team at Scotiabank is at the forefront of the journey to transform the Bank into a data centric organization through impactful customer insights, innovative analytics, and well governed data. One of the main areas of transformation is the way data is produced, consumed, and managed at an enterprise level to drive business value. The aim is to provide a truly productized offering of re-usable data that can be delivered iteratively through a streamlined process and framework in order to meet the velocity that will allow data consumers to focus on delivering business value. We are looking to build our delivery team with influencers, makers, creators and industry leaders who will drive us forward.

As the VP of Business Architecture & Strategy, you will be responsible for establishing the Data Strategy and leading the Business Architecture and Product Architecture teams. This role will provide business outcome-focused leadership for a global transformation program. You will work closely with the Enterprise Data and Enterprise Platform teams to mature our global platform and data products to best support our business goals and align with industry best practices. You will also be the conduit with the wider organizational stakeholders to evangelize the data modernization strategy and curate the business outcomes into deliverable products.

Business Strategy Leadership:

  • Build and establish the business planning discipline across the organization; distill business-led strategies that inform integrated roadmaps
  • Lead the Business Planning team to embed the discipline within each business pillar and provide dedicated scale to support the organizational goals
  • Create the frameworks and capability models that allow the organization to establish proactive management of business strategy at scale
  • Provide holistic, multi-year placemat of Strategy-in-Action to deliver on Business Outcome and Impact

Business Architecture Leadership:

  • Develop and maintain the business architecture framework for the data practice, encompassing business models, processes, capabilities, and data structures.
  • Collaborate with senior executives and stakeholders to understand business objectives, define strategic initiatives, and create actionable plans to achieve them.
  • Assess the current business architecture landscape, identify gaps, and recommend improvements to optimize business operations.
  • Lead the product architecture team to define the technical capability of our products, ensuring usability, scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Ensure that product architecture aligns with industry standards, security requirements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Foster effective collaboration between business stakeholders, product development teams, and other departments to ensure seamless communication and cooperation.
  • Collaborate with IT leaders to align business and product architecture initiatives with the overall technology strategy.

Product Strategy Leadership:

  • Define and communicate the data vision, strategy, and roadmap to the data engineering, data management, platform engineering and data consuming teams.
  • Monitor and evaluate technology trends and advancements to incorporate relevant innovations into product development.
  • Lead the product management team to provide technical product ownership across the different engineering functions, establish outcomes and goals for each roadmap and backlog.
  • Act as a bridge between business requirements and technical implementation, facilitating a shared understanding among different teams.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the Engineering leadership to develop and deliver products from ideation through to adoption
  • Work with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve technical issues that may impact the data products
  • Collaborate with Engineering leadership to develop and implement data and analytics architecture standards, processes, and tools to ensure consistent and high-quality data and analytics engineering
  • Collaborate with other organizational functions such as Infrastructure, Application, and Enterprise Architecture to integrate the Data Strategy into each facet of the organization

Risk Management:

  • Identify and address potential risks associated with business and product architecture decisions, ensuring business continuity and data integrity.
  • Develop and implement contingency plans to mitigate risks and ensure the resilience of systems and processes.

Team Development & Leadership:

  • Lead and mentor a team of senior professionals, providing guidance, feedback, and career development opportunities.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and collaboration within the architecture, product, and engineering teams.
  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education & Technical Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in data and analytics product or architecture or related roles.
  • Experience leading data and analytics teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong technical expertise in data architecture, data modeling, data management, and analytics.
  • Ability to be an effective influencer on technology direction / an effective evangelist.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Experience in business architecture and solution architecture.
  • Proven experience designing service and microservice based architectures
  • Experience with agile development methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of container and micro-services technologies
  • Functional experience developing applications using Cloud technologies (e.g. Google Cloud)
  • Proven experience working with big data technologies (e.g. Spark, Airflow, MinIO, Rancher)
  • Proven experience working with relational databases (DB2, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Strong Understanding of CI/CD (Jenkins, Git, Bitbucket, other).
  • Experience working with traditional data warehousing / ETL tools (Talend, Informatica, DataStage, other).
  • Knowledge and understanding of analytics & data science life cycle
  • Experience in Agile/Product/Architecture.
  • Experience in Cloud Data Solutions.

Additional Information

  • Experience in technical leadership of medium to large sized technical teams in delivering production solutions.
