What to Expect

Tesla Toronto Automation is looking for a highly motivated Process Development Engineer to actively contribute to the development and management of new assembly lines. This involves utilizing our advanced cell manufacturing equipment specifically designed for Tesla's cutting-edge battery cell—a crucial component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems.

As a machine-builder, Tesla Toronto Automation is uniquely positioned to design and implement new equipment to enhance the development lifecycle and launch of mass production (MP) cell manufacturing lines. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join in highly motivated and capable team to make unbelieve things into reality.

What You'll Do
  • Execute Design of Experiments (DoE) to optimize process conditions to improve cycle time and process yield without compromising product quality
  • Assist in reliability testing of in-house equipment (including sub-assemblies) simulating production environments (e.g. Dry Room) and qualify tool readiness for mass production
  • Perform material compatibility and characterization testing to assist in the mechanical design, ensuring the optimal selection of materials for specific applications
  • Drive development of Proof of Principle (PoP) projects through to full scale production that enables improved battery performance, quality, and cost
  • Implement Engineering Change Orders on existing machinery to unlock capacity and improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
  • Lead the process commissioning on new production lines through factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT)
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Control Plans
  • Work with production staff and engineers to develop, validate, and improve processes used in manufacturing and manufacturability of designs
  • Debug process integration issues to ensure interactions between processes are kept under control
  • Build process documentation to accurately define the process to cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.)
What You'll Bring
  • Must be willing to travel (up to 25%)
  • Must be comfortable working with chemicals
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Applied Sciences, experience and evidence of exceptional ability, or equivalent
  • Good understanding of BOMs, manufacturability, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews and cost reduction methodologies
  • Experience breaking down high-level performance issues into addressable action items
  • Capable of identifying critical process parameters and applying statistics to process measurement and control
  • Strong skills with common workplace software (word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc.)
  • Experience analyzing and optimizing manufacturing processes using failure mode and effects analysis, root cause analysis, and statistical process control methods (DoE, 6 Sigma, Cp and Cpk, GRR, FMEA, PFMEA)
  • Ability to read and interpret basic mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Preferred knowledge of MySQL, Python, R, JMP, Minitab, Tableau, Ignition and TwinCat software
