Focus is being the technologist and champion of process instrumentation [e.g.; fluid flow, pressure, temperature] application engineering (IAE), both offline and inline control elements. Includes understanding principles of measurement, type selection, assembly configurations, sizing and setpoint calculations, discrete, analog, and digital signal acquisition with pre- and post- processing. Systems supported include; nuclear steam supply, steam turbine generator, balance of plant, and yard.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Leads and is accountable for integrated plant design, functional, and business objectives in the field of process instrumentation, both offline and inline control elements, includes understanding principles of measurement, type selection of instruments, sensors or transducers based on discrete, analog, and digital signal acquisition with pre- and post- processing in wide variety of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, ultrasonic, HVAC, electrical, etc.
  • Leads, does, and provide oversight in preparation and modification of; requirements, design notes, interface control documents, specifications and datasheets, instrument and actuator assembly configurations, sizing and setpoint calculations, charts and graphs, functional block diagrams, inter connection wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, detailed layout and outline drawings, databases, lists, etc.
  • Prepare, assist others, and review broad group of technical documents; component requirements, design, and purchase specifications, quality assurance requirements (QAR) plans and specifications, test plans, procedures, and reports.
  • Ensure systems, components, and equipment designs meet requirements for; functionality, performance, qualification [environmental, seismic], interfaces, safety hazards, reliability, etc. and conforms with applicable regulations and industry standards [IEC, IEEE].
  • Promote incorporation of operational experience, lessons learned, and industry best practices.
  • Perform cost-benefit studies for technical risk, function, performance, and margin optimization.
  • Use variety of software based tools for; requirements, design, change, configuration, and document management.
  • Contributes to overall strategy, manages complex issues with solutions, develop processes, and technically lead IAE Technical Working Group (TWG) within GEH between I&C, Electrical, and Mechanical as well as between GEH and our Architect Engineering (AE) partner suppliers including cross-functional teams of; Product Management, Project Delivery, Quality, Sourcing, and Field Support.
  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through analysis, preparation, and presentation of technical data to internal and external parties.
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage and protect our intellectual property rights.
  • Prepare learning or training programs, and assess technical competency depth as well as provide guidance, direction, and oversight to engineers, co-ops, interns, technicians, etc.
  • Provide guidance and support of Qualification Matrix to assess suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP).
  • Support initiatives in; Simplification, LEAN, Design For Reliability (DFR), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Value Engineering (VE), and Design To Cost (DTC).
  • Ensure products are delivered on-spec., on-budget, and on-schedule with integrity, safety, security, and quality.
  • Champion nuclear safety culture - Ensure compliance with GEH policies

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • 8 year experience as an recognized IAE practitioner and subject matter expert (SME).
  • 10 year experience with ANSI/ISA Stds; 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4-1991, 5.5, 67.04.01, 67.04.02, etc.
  • 5 year experience with IEC Std 61987, Industrial-process measurement and control family.
  • 15 year experience with PC and desktop engineering productivity software [Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio].

Desired Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer - Control Systems by National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) in USA or Professional Engineer (PEng) of Ontario (PEO) in Canada.
  • Project Management Professional (PM) certification from PMI or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated leadership in defining the state of the art in IAE along with the ability to teach and set standard practices within the field.
  • Experience with functional, performance, margin and qualification [EMI/RFI, environmental, radiation, seismic] testing methods.
  • Experience with IEEE Stds; 315, 323, 384, 488.1, 488.2, 488.1, 497, etc.
  • Experience with EPRI Technical Reports and guidance; EPRI TR-102323, TR-106439, TR-107339, etc.
  • Experience using requirements definition engineering and management including use of associated tools [ELM {DOORS-NextGen} by IBM].
  • Experience with plant design, layout, and instrumentation tools [AVEVA, Bently, SmartPlant].
  • Experience with mathematical modelling [Mathcad, Mathmatica, MATLAB].
  • Experience with statistical analysis techniques and software based tools [Minitab].
  • Knowledge, skill, and experience in; structured problem solving methods, LEAN, define, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC), design for six sigma (DFSS), design for reliability (DFR), failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), design to cost (DTC), and Value Engineering (VE).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including cross- discipline and functional facilitation, and influencing skills with focus on requirements, design basis document and technical presentation preparation and delivery.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills as an inclusive team player able to work successfully in matrix environment - Executing multiple assignments and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to document a strategy and plan, market it to others, then lead the initiatives or programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability in IAE.
  • Clear thinker, detail oriented, insightful, quantitative, results oriented - Able to learn quickly and make reasoned, sound, and timely decisions.
  • Able and willing to take ownership and responsibility for work scoping, deliverables planning, prioritizing, scheduling, budgeting, action tracking, monitoring, corrective actions, reporting, etc.
  • Tenacious self-starter with positive energy, bias for action, and proven track record of delivering on commitments and goals in a fast paced environment.
