Job Summary

The Solution Engineering (Campus Solutions unit) of the Information Technology Services department requires a Senior Business Analyst. This role will elicit business needs and requirements to support ongoing development, upgrades and new capabilities for the administrative systems which support the student experience from admission to convocation and beyond. In this role, you will collaborate with business stakeholders and end-users to optimize business processes, and liaise with other business, system and programmer analysts to effectively connect a vast array of IT systems and tools with the users that need them.

As a member of the Campus Solutions business analysis team, you have an eye for process improvements and recognized skill at implementing new applications and assisting clients to adapt to process changes. You will use your research and analysis skills to bring value and understanding to process re-engineering efforts in an area that underpins current, prospective and graduating students' interaction with the University related to admissions, academics and finances. You will contribute to the success of a wide range of initiatives, from large-scale transformation to initiatives focused on specific client needs. Such initiatives include the digital transformation of manual administrative processes, implementation of new ERP (Peoplesoft) functionality, government compliance assignments, integrations, and resolving production issues.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understands, collaborates, liaises and communicates with internal and external stakeholders to plan and address information systems changes to meet current and future business requirements.
  • Acts as a project lead to research, investigate and recommend systems and business process improvements based on a comprehensive analysis of options, resource estimates and risk/benefit analysis. Performs cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed changes. Prepares written proposals of recommendations and presents to business stakeholders.
  • Elicits, edits, analyzes and documents user requirements to ensure business needs are met; includes brainstorming, documenting and interface analysis, and conducting interviews, focus groups or requirements gathering workshops.
  • Creates and reviews the business requirements documents prepared by business analysts and others to be shared with key stakeholders and project team members that include aspects of regulatory, business, end-user, functional or non-functional requirements and provides insight into both the current and future state requirements.
  • Collaborates with other members of the IT Services team to ensure requirements and specifications align with existing and proposed tools and services.
  • Uses structured analysis, including process models, data models and workflow models to support and enhance complex requirements, to document and communicate complex requirements and to organize information and recommendations into coherent ideas.
  • Creates and reviews detailed system functional specifications for reports, interfaces, conversions, modifications, customizations or extensions prepared by business and system analysts.
  • Reviews test scenarios by designing test scripts, test plans and test scenarios that check outcomes to validate whether requirements have been met.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and conflict resolution skills that enable successful delivery and implementation of new technology solutions.
  • Designs solutions with a high quality, effortless user experience.
  • Engages with business partners and influences project decisions; supports project-level change management; engages with delivery teams around shared project vision.
  • Performs complex problem diagnosis, detailed analysis and completes investigation of systems failures or issues. Provides recommendations on corrective actions.
  • Supports and influences the decision making process through consensus building when conflicting requirements or processes are identified.
  • Supports business requirements and information needs by using query and reporting tools.
  • Maintains a complete understanding of data definitions, data usage within the administrative applications and data retrieval methods.
  • Ensures updates and changes to application configurations adhere to change management and security specifications requirements.
  • Collaborates with business owners and identifies training support staff to oversee business process training. Provides updates to current training materials and documentation. Coordinates and delivers training as required.
  • Adheres to task and project deadlines; resolves or escalates these challenges as required.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the quality review process in keeping with established project and business analysis methodology.
  • Manages risk effectively, anticipates challenges, investigates issues, and makes recommendations for solutions, understanding cross-functional impact.
  • Updates and shares technical and business knowledge to remain current on changing systems and business processes.
  • Occasionally required to work on-call after normal business hours.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree in computer science, information management, business administration or related field combined with a minimum of 5 years business analyst experience.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with business analysis discipline (CCBA or CBAP certification is an asset).
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of project management methodologies (PMP or PRINCE2 certification is an asset).
  • Minimum five years experience with administrative information systems and online/web-based applications; ERP/PeopleSoft experience considered an asset.
  • Detailed knowledge of administrative processes, preferably within a university environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership role through previous organizational process improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience with systems development implementation methodology, and project implementation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including experience in writing technical documentation.
  • Consideration may be given to equivalent combination of education and experience.
